Checking 4G Signal Strength

This note is for customers who wish to use a Paypont supplied 4G modem and helps them confirm whether or not the signal strength from their phone provider is strong enough inside the laundry room for the modem to function normally.

The attached note explains some key concepts on how signal strength can be measured inside the laundry room using your handset.

The field test should be performed while standing at the exact point in the laundry room where you intend to locate the modem and connect it to power.

Note down the RSRP0 value. We want this to be in range of
  • -40 to -95 DBM

There’s another useful data point on this page, labelled RSRQ0 (Reference Signal Received Quality). This is a value derived from both the signal strength and interference. This usually ranges between -3 (good) and -19.5 (bad). It’s possible to have a lower number, but to do so you have to have a really noisy, low-power signal.
